The character sketch of Max form "The first seven years"

Monika Bielaiuskaitė 1gr. The Character Sketch of Max form “The First Seven Years” Max is one of the main characters in the story “The first seven years”. Directly from the author we know that he is a student, he is studying a business course leading to a degree in accountancy. This shows us that here is secretly mentioned the money. Also the narrator gives some more detailed information about Max appearance: He was tall, grotesquely thin he was wearing a loose, long slushy overcoat that hung down to his ankles, and a soggy, old brown hat, as battered as the shoes he had brought in. (Line 65-69) These details tell us that Max could be either poor, because he is a student and does not work anywhere, or he could be very mean and does not look after his own appearance. So, Max is presented by the author with the help of telling. Now we know his appearance, some facts about social background (he was a peddler’s son) and his occupation. We see Max when he comes to the shoemaker’s shop, and he brought his old shoes “with enormous holes in the soles”. The shoemaker asked him to have a talk and they went into hall. When the conversation begin Max was a bit nervous ““Thanks” he said nervously alert”, because he could not understand what the talk would be about. But when he got the point of this conversation he was trying to get something from this situation. He saw that he has made a good impression for the shoemaker and now then Feld (the shoemaker) asked him to see his daughter, Max imagined that he would get something back for this favor:” He was stared down like hawk.” As Miriam could be booty for him and would help to reach him some benefit. So he insisted to get an idea about the price for the shoes repairing. Here we can see that he is not as interest in the date with the shoemaker’s daughter as in the price for repairing the shoes. Later we see Max when he comes to take Miriam. We do not get any new information about Max this time. But after another date, we get another opinion about Max, Miriam’s opinion. She says: He’s nothing more than materialist. He has no soul. He is interested in things.” So Miriam confirmed that he was just seeking the benefit to himself from these dates. Indirectly we can understand that when Miriam understood Max’s intentions or better to say his wishes, he did not want to meet her anymore. He did not call her, and did not ask to go anywhere. And what is more “he took a different route to school” in order not to meet Miriam or Feld, And not to have a conversation or something what had happened, and why he did not call. Finally, when Max appears the last time in the shoemaker’s store to get back the shoes he left he got them looking as new ones, because Feld did everything by himself thinking that something nice could happen between Max and Miriam. Then Max felt particularly strange, this we could see from his body language: “Max’s Adam’s apple went up once when he saw them, and his eyes had little lights in them.” He understood that the shoes repaired like that have to cost more than they agreed before, so he asked about the price again. Also, he thought that the price could get higher because he left Miriam as well. Here again appears his materialistic quality and we can see that he really was using the situation which had appeared in his life. From these facts we see that Max is a flat character in this story, because he was representing only one characteristic – materialism, as Miriam has said and he confirmed with his actions. Max did not change in the story. We see him in the shop at the beginning of the story and at the end of it the same: he looks benefit for himself and worries that the situation he has had will disappear. Of course at the beginning he came just to fix his shoes, but I am talking about Max after the conversation whit Feld. So, Max is a static character because he did not show any change in his personality.
