Mark Twain uses plain style in his writing. In the beginning of his career, Twain
worked as a journalist, which clearly influenced his style. According to Peter B. High,
“he was like a newspaperman who reports what he sees”(High 79). Twain’s style, in
contrast to other writers of the 19th century, who used romantic, flowery and sentimental
style, was based on realistic, colloquial American speech. Peter Conn observes that:
“More than any other writer of the 19th century, more even than Whitman, he recognized
and exploited the literary possibilities of America’s colloquial language” (Conn 250).
Twain uses realistic language as it really is, plain and neutral words, his style is very
concrete. In the short story “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog” Twain also uses
colloquial speech. Firstly, Twain uses abbreviations widely, for example, don’t, ‘em,
warn’t.
Secondly, he uses colloquial or even slang words in his short story, for example, feller,
mare, busted, come out winner. In addition, Twain often ignores grammatical rules, ex.:
“Lots of the boys here has seen […]” (Clemens 16). Finally, he uses very long sentences,
which is the imitation of the spoken language.
The short story “Jim Smiley and his Jumping Frog” is told using the structure of a
traditional Southwestern frame story, which “was a popular and familiar format in
America in the 19th century” (Howard 1). In a frame tale, one story appears in and is
