Šiauliai city

The Baltic Sea unites the people that have lived on this coast for centuries. In the old days it was a crossroad where the routes of the Slavic merchants, the Vikings and pirates would intersect. Both merchandise and the variety of cultural heritage were enriched the Baltic countries in many ways. Hansa was a commercial and political union of towns of North Germany, Prussia and Livonia (13th century – 1669). In the Medieval Ages it maintained its influence over the entire Baltic region for hundreds of years. In the 15th century Hansa united 160 towns in 10 countries. Some Haseatic towns, Danzig, Konigsberg and Riga, maintained close relations with Lithuania.
The population of the Šiauliai region, which enjoyed the status of a state economic domain during the 14th – 17th centuries, was granted more concessions then private landowners. Being free citizens, they would produce more products and goods, a part of which was soled in the town market. Šiauliai, like the rest of northern Lithuania, constituted the economic rear of Riga. Haseatic merchants appreciated the local production of flaxseeds, wool and its goods, livestock, leather, fat and wax. Nearly, all the goods were exported to Western Europe. There are numerous records of transaction between Šiauliai merchants and those of Kaunas, which was a Hanseatic town at that time. Šiauliai merchants enjoyed quite favorable trade conditions in Liepaja, Ventspils and Jelgava. The trade routs were leading to Klaipėda, too.

It all started with reindeer. Sometime around 10.000 BC (give or take a century or two), after the Ice Age glacier had receded, hunters wandered into what is now Lithuania in pursuit of reindeer that were nibbling away on the tasty freshly reveled tundra.
