In this essay, I will explore the nature of racism in Europe in the 19th century, its connection to the colonialism and the impact it had on the non-European populations.
Racism in the 19th century Europe was primarily based on the belief that the white race was superior to all other races. Europeans believed that their culture, language, and religion were superior to those of other races and that they were a civilizing force, and that it was their duty to bring civilization to the uncivilized people of the world. Certainly, the ideology of racism had already existed in Europe for centuries, but it became more pronounced during the 19th century. One of the primary drivers of racism in Europe during that time was the rise of scientific racism, which was the use of scientific theories to justify racist beliefs. This form of racism was based on the concept of Social Darwinism the main idea of which is that the human race is subject to the laws of natural selection, and that some races are superior to others.
In addition to scientific racism, the 19th century was also marked by the development of nationalism, which encouraged people to identify themselves according to their nation or race. Nationalism often involved the promotion of a specific national or racial identity and the exclusion of those who did not fit into that identity.
