Remember that we use the
past simple tense to indicate
situations that happened at a
specific time in the past!
F O R E X A M P L E :
• Peter played the guitar last weekend.
• She ate donuts yesterday.
U S E :
• To talk about events in the past that are
now finished
Example:
• We had a great skiing holiday in Austria
in January
U S E :
• To talk about habits in the past
Example:
• My family went to the south of Spain
for a two-week holiday every summer
U S E :
• To talk about situations in the past
Example:
• When I was younger, I was very
interested in motorbikes.
U S E :
• In reported speech
Example:
• She said she didn’t want to go out for
the evening

Don't forget that there are two
kinds of verbs that express past
tense:

• Work - Worked
• Dance - Danced
• Try - Tried
• Play - Played
• Stop - Stopped
•
• Regular verbs are those that
have an –ed ending.
I R R E G U L A R
V E R B S
• Run - Ran
• Eat - Ate
• Be - Was / Were
• There is no rule for the
conjugation of these verbs. We
must memorize them.
