Museum History
We should seek the sources of the Panevezys Museum we should seek in the beginning of the 20th century. Then the exhibits of private collections started to be conjoined to united exposition.
In 1908 the Duma of the city considered the issue of a museum and a library foundation. The Municipality of Panevezys understood the importance of these enterprises but there wasn’t enough money for their foundation so it was delayed.
When the modern state of Lithuania was established the studies of native land obtained a higher level. In 1919 some enthusiastic people from Panevezys Men’s Gymnasium started collecting ethnographic material of the land. In 1923 the association for exploration of the native land was founded. It was the first association for regional studies in Lithuania. Next year the association for Panevezys land studies was also founded there and the main goal of the association was to establish a museum. The initiators of association and museum establishing were County Governor V. Rozmanas, the distinguished naturalist J. Elisonas, the linguist and teacher P. Butenas, the teacher P. Bliumas, the lawyer and public man J. Moigis. Thanks to their efforts on 18th of January 1925 the first exposition of the Museum was opened.

Museum employees arrange expositions and exhibitions, write articles, prepare publications, educational programs, conduct excursions and organize various cultural events.
