New Year's Day is a national holiday celebrated on January 1st, the first day of the New Year, following both the Gregorian and the Julian calendar.
In England, the tradition is that the first person to walk into the house on New Year’s Day is the person who brings luck to the people who live there. Young, healthy, dark haired males are preferred as they are said to bring the best luck.
