Movie Review
The Social Network (2010)
The movie “The Social Network” directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin depicts the founding of Facebook, a defining invention of the 21st century. Alongside its creation, it delves into personal and legal problems related to it. Innovation, betrayal, and friendship are all themes present in the movie. In this review I will firstly summarize the movie, before diving into the characters, the themes, the plot, the setting and lastly the cinematography and sound design.
The movie opens up with a scene in which Mark Zuckerberg gets dumped by his girlfriend Erica Albright. Back in his dorm, Mark, while drunk, insults Erica in his blog. He then goes on to hack his collage databases and code a website that lets you rate females based on attractiveness. After the website crashes Harvard's network due to large amounts of traffic, Mark is given a 6-month academic probation. Zuckerberg gets approached by twins Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, who recruit him to work on Harvard Connections, a social network that would make dating easier for Harvard students. The twins accuse Mark of stealing their idea when they learn about TheFacebook- a social network Zuckerberg and his friend Eduardo Saverin have been working on. TheFacebook grows in popularity and Mark expands it to other universities such as Yale, Columbia, and Stanford. Co-founder of Napster Sean Parker agrees to meet the faces behind TheFacebook. According to Sean, this new social network is a billion-dollar idea. While Eduardo is unimpressed by the meeting, Parker heavily moves Mark. He takes his advice, renames the network to Facebook and moves to California where he continues to develop the website. Eduardo, whose shares were heavily diluted, confronts Mark and Sean. The latter later gets cut off after getting caught in possession of cocaine. Zuckerberg gets sued by the Winklevoss twins for intellectual property theft, and by Eduardo for the unfairly diluted shares of the company. The movie ends with Mark, alone in an office, sending a friend request to his old girlfriend Albright.
