Movie review (All the Bright Places)

All the Bright Places is a very moving novel that deals well with mental illness and raises some big questions about it. Having loved the book, I was not disappointed with Brett Haley’s new film version, which deals with a few dark issues and is handled with an extremely sensitive touch which may be triggering for some people.
The film opens up with a scene of Violet standing on the edge of the bridge, wanting to jump off. While on his morning run, Finch sees her and gently discourages her from that. He also can relate to this as he is looking for reasons to stay alive, writing them down on colour coded sticky notes and putting them on his bedroom walls. Their lives change when their geography teacher assigns them a project, including travelling around Indiana. They get closer through these activities. His affection encourages her to embrace life, while her presence gives him a reason to live. However, as one of them ascends into the light,...
