Minority rights group presentation

Minority Rights Group International (MRG) was founded in 1969 by David Astor, the then editor and proprietor of the Observer newspaper in the United Kingdom.
Troubled by the regular reports of ethnic persecution around the world that crossed his desk, Astor wanted to publish information about human rights violations and discrimination in order to shame governments into improving their record.
With a first major grant secured from the Ford Foundation, a press conference in London in November 1969 launched Minority Rights Group, ‘an organization for the defence of oppressed minorities worldwide’.
• Support the advocacy initiatives of minority and indigenous community representatives, work alongside them to ensure that their voices are heard. Additionally, they conduct advocacy at the national, regional and international levels to ensure that governments and international agencies respect and promote minority and indigenous peoples’ rights.
• Publish authoritative publications that are widely valued by decision makers, academics and the media.
• Produce documentary films on a wide range of minority and indigenous issues and countries – from the overfishing that threatens coastal communities in Gambia to the harsh conditions many refugees face as they try to reach the European Union.
• Pioneering legal cases work to advance the protection of minorities and indigenous peoples under international law.
• Deliver projects with our minority and indigenous partners in many countries around the world
• Provide training and coaching on different facets of minority and indigenous peoples’ rights to civil society organizations, human rights defenders, journalists and other professionals, and decision makers.
