In 2001 the total value of gross agricultural production was 4.6 miliard Litas. During the seven years its structure changed insignificantly.
Products, which had taken gross agricultural production: livestock and birds, sugar beets, fodder plants, fruit and vegetables, potatoes, milk, eggs, grain, other.
In 2001 milk production accounted for 20 per cent in the structure of gross agricultural production. Volumes of export and import of milk and dairy products account for 30 per cent of the total export of agricultural and food industry. Great consumption potential of milk and dairy production on the home market, positive tendencies in export of milk and dairy products create favourable perspectives for the development of the dairy industry.
During the period between 1995 and 2001 the number of livestock decreased by as much as 35 per cent in Lithuania. The chief reason is the decrease in meat consumption. Moreover, the Lithuanian meat market fails to meet the competition of the meat producers from the European Union and other countries.
Lithuania has favourable conditions to develop grain economy, suitable soil, favourable climate, grain growing traditions and experience, as well as industrial potential.
Fruit and berries constitute one of the most perspective branches of agriculture, which can assure the increase in employment and income of the rural population. Agro-climatic conditions in Lithuania are favourable for the development of gardening and berry-growing.
Comparatively favourable natural-climatic conditions and sufficient labour force resources raise the possibility to successfully develop oreliculture, provide the home market with vegetables, as well as to export part of the production abroad.
