In “A Voyage to the Houyhnhnms” Gulliver gets to know two kinds of women: the
Yahoo and the Horse women. They are extremely different from each other and also from
European women.
The Yahoo women are depicted as aggressive, dirty women with lascivious sexual
appetite. An example of this is the scene in which a female Yahoo jumps after Gulliver,
attacks and tries to rape him: “It happened that a young female Yahoo, standing behind a
bank, saw the whole proceeding, and inflamed by desire, as the nag and I conjectured,
came running with all speed, and leaped into the water, within five yards of the place
where I bathed”( Jonathan Swift, 252). Gulliver is horrified how the female Yahoo jumps
on him. He is so shocked by her aggressiveness, he does not know what to do: ”I was
never in my life so terribly frightened; the nag was grazing at some distance, not
suspecting any harm. She embraced me after a most fulsome manner; I roared as loud as I
could”(252). This behaviour of the Yahoo female is vastly different from Horse – women
behaviour. Yahoo female is ruled by passion and totally uncontrollable instincts. This
shows that she is extremely animalistic and the narrator depicts her as a negative
character by that. Moreover, Gulliver learns that the female yahoo can leave her family
after she gives birth. There is no allegiance to anyone.
Horse women represent something totally different: control, reason, rationality or even
lack of emotions. This is widely showed in the story about death and funeral. The death
of horses never comes suddenly and unexpectedly. Horses express “neither joy nor grief
at their departure” (260). The narrator describes a Horse – woman who comes to a
