Italy and its capital

• The word Italy derives from the Homeric word ιταλός, which means "bull". Excavations throughout Italy have found proof of people in Italy dating back to the Paleolithic period (the "Old Stone Age") some 200,000 years ago. The first Greek settlers, who arrived in Italy in the 8th century BC, possibly named their new land "land of bulls".
• Italy is situated in Southern Europe. It has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east.
• The peninsula is surrounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east. It comprises the Po river valley, and two large islands in the Mediterranean sea: Sicily and Sardinia.
• There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines.
Italy climate
• The Italian climate is not unique and far from the stereotyped one of the "land of sun".
• The climate of the coastal areas of the peninsula is very different from that of the interior, particularly during the winter months. In the higher areas are cold, wet, and often snowy.
Religion
• Roman Catholicism is by far the largest religion in the country.

• The official language of Italy is Standart Italian, descendant of Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant of Latin.
