If pushed too far, can open-mindedness itself become restrictive?

Open-mindedness is one of the attributes from an IB learner profile. IB students are taught to be open minded to the world, ideas and surroundings. Being open-minded means being considerate to new possible ideas and information that may question individuals opinions and perspectives. Open-mindedness includes facing different people and life situations without being overly judgemental and critical. Open mindedness lets society grow and learn in other terms rather than books and school textbooks. However, school and literature expands our way of thinking and teaches us the variety of the world. One who is open minded tends to be more adaptable and changeable in terms of thinking, when new evidence and answers are presented. People who have connections with people of color, tend to be more open minded than those who have only one type of people around. But can open-mindedness become restrictive? How can it be restrictive if it means broader perspectives? In this essay restrictions of open-mindedness will be discussed using arts and psychology as some of the areas of knowledge.
Open-mindedness is a well needed attribute of an individual in modern life. Being open minded in other words means being able to adapt to new ideas, perspectives and not denying them at first sights. Open-mindedness has several benefits. When a person is open minded it usually is easier to solve challenging problems. Open-mindedness lets a person approach and look into obstacles from various perspectives in terms of finding the best solution. Open mindedness also increases the feeling of empathy which leads to better understanding of the world and surroundings, improves communication skills and sudden changes. Moreover, open-mindedness might reduce stress and anxiety levels. When a person is open minded, they usually have the will and curiosity to learn and accept the world as it is. Furthermore, learning skills also improve due to enhanced ability to consider different perspectives, finding new solutions to overcome obstacles. As a result, open-mindedness leads to better world acceptance and the ability to change and adapt, overcome challenges, improve communication skills and reduce stress and anxiety levels.
