Conflict is one of the main themes around which the play “Romeo and Juliet” revolves. Shakespeare presents this conflict through the actions and speech of the characters, using multiple language techniques and structural devices to convey the theme of conflict to the audience. Shakespeare also shows different types of conflict such as parental conflict; he shows this when Juliet fights about her arranged marriage with Paris (The governor's son). Shakespeare uses parental conflict to make the audience relate with it as everyone at some point in their life has a conflict with their parents.
The period of time when Romeo and Juliet was written in 'The Elizabethan Era' and was also known as 'The Renaissance'. A time of significant change in the fields of religion and politics. The play presents many medieval thoughts and ideas where children were treated as property and often didn’t have a close relationship with their parents rather they had a close relationship with ‘wet nurses’.
Shakespeare crafted the prologue to ensure that tragic predestination succeeded in introducing the play's conflict. The prologue is an Elizabethan sonnet that introduces the themes of death, struggle, love, and fate. “Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean,” the audience is told that the play's civilians would fight until someone is seriously hurt. Elizabethans believed in astrology, and they discuss fate throughout the prologue, informing us that there will be some deaths that cannot be avoided. Shakespeare is presenting conflict in such a way that it’s keeping the audience on its feet and guessing what’s going to happen next.
