13th of August, 2 o’clock on Friday afternoon, beautiful day in construction site at remote location in the midlands. Sun is shining, everyone just finish their lunch and in their minds Friday night out and long weekend. What could be better way to end hard day and even harder week?
Suddenly howl greeted from distance. Somebody screamed for help and ambulance. Peacefull atmosphere on the site had gone in the second and become a pure mess. What happened? Big load, lifted by tower crane fell off the crane because of poor condition of lifting chains, in result pressed Banksman’s John chest. Ambulance arrived just 10 minutes after incident but sadly their just confirmed mans dead.
Sad story should show us how dangerous our workplace can be. Despite construction industry, where danger is around every corner, but every single workplace can be dangerous and fatal if managed unsafe and if act unsafe. Even office enviromnment packed of hazards such as computers, cables on the floor, canteen. Areas like shops or other places where public is involved is even more dangerous and more difficult to manage.
We all are responsible for our families and our family safety and welfare. We have to be sure that we act safely and we back home to our families in the end of the day. That is our main priority. Management however has quite different issues, or should we say has more of them. They are placing greater emphasis now on work monitoring and prevention of accidents and are requiring to uphold high safety standards among their work groups. Poor safety standards place employees at risk of serious injury if not death, employers can suffer of lost of productivity, high costs of accidents and low morale of a work group can be affected (Harvey Noel,...
