Glossary Listening

• Comparing: Teacher shows students sentences and phrases and having them pronounce the words correctly in isolation, e. G. I am going to see him tomorrow /ai/ gəυig/ tu:/ /si:/ /him/ /tәmorəυ/. Then she plays them a tape of someone saying the sentences in normal connected speech /aimgonəsijimtәmorəυ/. Teacher asks students what differences they can hear.
• The design of tapes and machines means that students can listen to one track on their tapes and record on another and then listen back to the original and their recording.
• A teacher encourages students to choose for themselves what they listen to and to do so for pleasure and general language improvement. It usually take place outside the classroom.
• General understanding; listening without getting hung up (on the meaning of every single words).
Guided questions
• Questions are given to the text which students are going to listen to. Students read the questions before listening the text. During listening students note their answers which help them to understand general ideas of the text.
Inferential interpretation of the text
• In listening, where students need the skill of listening for gist and not every word. Students have to concentrate on the gist and answer guided questions to understand general ideas of the text.
Instrumental reason of listening
• A large amount of listening take place because it will help us to achive some clear aim (some kind of utilitarian or instrumental purpose).
Intensive listening using taped material
• It usually take place inside the classroom, good practice of listening skills.
Intensive “live” listening reading aloud
• An enjoyable activity, when done with conviction and style, is the teacher reading aloud to the class. This allows students to hear a clear spoken version of written text.
Intensive “live” listening story- telling
