Gender equality

We have made great strides toward gender equality in the recent past, but we still have a long way to go to ensure equal opportunities for women in terms of livelihoods, participation and voting rights. Now that the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) is ravaging the world, the stakes are even higher, as women have often been on the front lines in times of major crises. Women predominate in key positions such as nurses, social workers and caregivers. They also work as physicians and volunteers, and are political and community leaders who make critical decisions about how to deal with the health, social, and economic impacts of crises. Women's participation will be vital to our success in combating this common global threat.
Today we take it for granted that women can vote. However - with the exception of a few countries such as New Zealand, Australia and Finland - universal suffrage only became a reality after World War I. In fact, women's right to vote was not introduced into international law until 1948 by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. Women have also taken advantage of increased opportunities to be leaders. In 2019, women held nearly one in four seats in legislative assemblies around the world, more than double the number in 1995. Women are also more likely to hold leadership positions now than they were twenty years...
