• Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania.
• It is situated in the west-east of Lithuania, and covers an area of 9731 km².
• It has a population of 848 555 people.
• 1323 is the year of Vilnius' establishment. This is the date when Vilnius was first mentioned in Duke Gediminas’ letters.
• This Grand Duke is known as the founder of Vilnius.
Legend about Vilnius
The legend tells us, that duke Gediminas, had a dream of an iron wolf howling on a high hill. Lizdeika, a pagon priest, explained the dream that Gediminas would have to build a castle and found a city which would make Lithuania's name famous all over the world.
Since then, the Iron Wolf is
has been known as the
symbol of Vilnius.

Kernavė for the Iron Wolf.

Vilnius is full of places to go and see something.

Gediminas' castle
• The castle is considered to be one of the symbols of Vilnius. The tower is named after the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.
• After walking up the Castle Hill you still have to climb about 80 steps up the Gedimina’s Tower before admiring the breathtaking view of Vilnius.
• The museum was founded in 1960 in the best preserved and restored western tower.
• The history of this museum tells us that at first the Upper Castle was a wooden one. Today only the Western castle tower is left.
