Dear Chairperson, adjudicators, fellow speakers, members of the audience, my name is Arno, and I am here today along with my team to show you that the death penalty should be brought back.
In our opinion, the death penalty is a tool that will reduce brutality in our world. If it were applied more often, it could save many innocent lives. Several studies have proven the effectiveness of the death penalty, as it prevents murders much more than simple imprisonment.
As early as 1973, Isaac Ehrlich used a new kind of analysis, it showed that for every prisoner executed, 7 lives were spared .
According to a more recent study by professors at Emory University an average of 18 murders were prevented. (Other studies have estimated this number at three, five and 14).
If some of you have heard of studies saying otherwise or being inconclusive, that’s only because the death penalty is rarely used and it takes years for an execution to actually be carried out. This also explains the difference between the results of the conclusive studies proving the point of its use.
But in what way is this punishment positive towards society and our security? Quite simply through DETERRENCE, the action of discouraging an act or event through fear of the consequences.
The first type of deterrence caused by death penalty is general deterrence. It’s the message that gets sent to people who are thinking of committing a serious crime, telling them not to do it or else the punishment will be equivalent.
We’ve all experienced some kind of punishment due to misbehaving in our lives, whether from our parents, school, or perhaps directly from the authorities but if we still broke the rules it was because we did not fear the punishment enough. If we had feared the punishment more than we...
