In “Goblin Market”, Christina Rossetti deliberately contrasts the two sisters, but avoids the traditional “good/ bad” dichotomy. Discuss the differences between Laura and Lizzie by paying attention to the sets of images that characterize each sister and explain what the meaning of this contrast is. Consider, for instance, how the images of various senses as well as colours, places and so on serve in the poem to describe and characterize Laura and Lizzie.
In my essay I will describe and characterize the two sisters which appear in Christina Rossetti’s work “Goblin Market”. I will analyze both charecters, Laura and Lizzie, by paying special attention to different sets of images that define each sister. I will try to explain the meaning of those images, wich characterize both sisters.
The two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, see the goblins coming. Their reaction is very different:
“ “Oh,” cried Lizzie, “Laura, Laura,
You should not peep at goblin men.”
Lizzie covered up her eyes,
Covered close lest they should look.”
(Christina Rossetti, Goblin Market, ll. 48-51)
Lizzie is very suspicious. Even though she knows that goblins are somewhere near and she can even see them, she does not want to look at them. She is very cautious, knows what can happen, if she at least peeps at them. She is sure that something bad can happen, even if the sight is very pleasant.
Laura, on the contrary, is very curious:
“Laura reared her glossy head,
And whispered like the restless brook...”
(Christina Rossetti, Goblin Market, ll. 52-53)
It shows that Laura cannot resist an attractive sight, she wants to watch at the goblins, what they look like, what they have in their hands. Laura is like a little girl, wants to know all the things which surround her, not paying any attention to what might happen afterwards.
