Introduction
• About one in 15 people has asthma, a chronic condition whose symptoms are attacks of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. There is no cure for asthma, but most people can control the condition and lead normal, active lives.
Different things set off asthma attacks in different people. Smoke from cigarettes or a fire, air pollution, cold air, pollen, animals, house dust, molds, strong smells such as perfume or bus exhaust, wood dust, exercise, industrial chemicals--all can trigger an attack.
What is asthma?
• Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways.
• Asthma causes: recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.
The airways are tubes that carry air into and out of your lungs. People who have asthma have inflamed airways.

• When the airways react, the muscles around them tighten. This narrows the airways, causing less air to flow into the lungs.

What causes asthma?
• Asthma is caused by a combination of complex and incompletely understood environmental and genetic interactions.
• Almost all asthma sufferers have allergies. In fact, over 25% of people who have hay fever also develop asthma. Allergic reactions triggered by antibodies in the blood often lead to the airway inflammation that is associated with asthma.
