"Panevėžys is called the capital of Aukštaitija. It has been the 5th of the largest city in Lithuania for more than a century and now has more than 119 thousand inhabitants. Panevėžys lies on the bank of the river Nevėžis, so its name means „along the Nevėžis“. It is situated in the middle of Lithuania and is halfway between two Baltic capitals- Vilnius and Ryga. Also, the Via Baltica highway runs through the city and connects it to many Scandinavian and West european countries."

The city was first mentioned in 1503. September the 7th is celebrated as City Day. It is Panevėžys establishment day, on which a special meeting of the City Council is held, the most distinguishes citizens are given awards, International sports competition take place, art exhibition fairs are organised, products manufacture in Panevėžys and in the neighbouring towns are presented.
There are lots of beautiful and interesting places to visit. One of them- The Old riverbed. The Old riverbed separated from the diverted river flow was turned into a nice pond with lanes, bridges and original sculptures around it. It is sometimes considered as a symbol of Panevėžys and is a famous place for leisure time and festivals.
Another beautiful place- is Freedom Square, which is getting decorated in blossoming flowerbeds and fountains in summer. And an uplifting music is played in the square all- year- round.
Going Kranto street,which is very near to the city centre, stays the oldest building of all city, which was built in 1614 and now has a small museum. In the same street‘s cosy yard you will find a white building with ancient cartwheels hung on the wall....
