The United Kingdom, or U. K., is the political name which unites England, Scotland, Wales and Notrhern Ireland.
Eire, oe the Respublic of Ireland, is a separate country.
The capital of England is London.
The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh.
The capital of Wales is Cardiff.
The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
The population of the United Kingdom is about 56 million. The south and the central part of Grest Britain is more densely populated than the north. The population of some of Britain’s major cities in mid-1998 was as follows: London 7,187,272; Birmingham 1,013,431; Manchester 429,812; Glasgow 619,680; Edinburgh 450,000; Belfast 287,500; Cardiff 321,000.
The main cities are London in the south-east, Manchester in the West Midlands, Birmingham near the Welsh border, and Glasgow in Scotland and Bristol in the south-west.
Foreigners often refer to the United Kingdom as England but this is incorrect: the most correct name is Britain. The adjective is British and the people are the British. If you use this term then there wil be no risk of offending anymore.
The national flag of Britain is the Union Jack. It is a composition of three flags of England, Scotland and Ireland and was officially adopted in 1801.
The origin of the name is not certain but it is probably because Jack was the nickname of King James I who united the crowns of England and Scotland in 1603.

Scotland lies to the north of England. It is two-thirds the size of England but its population is only about 5 million. This is mainly because it is a very mountainous country and many areas are uninhabited.
It can be divided into three regions: the Highlands and Islands, the Central Lowlands and the Southern Uplands.
