The charity became an adoption agency in 1926 and expanded to work outside the UK in 1969, supporting children's social care development in southern Africa, the Caribbean and Central America.
Action for Children (formerly National Children’s Home) is a UK children’s charity committed to helping vulnerable, neglected children, young people, and their families, throughout the UK.
Back in 1996, the organisation established the first intensive family support service and remains the leader in delivering new innovative and evidence-based programmes, changing families’ lives for the better.
Through 650 projects and services based around the UK, the charity works with over 300,000 children, young people, and their families. It assists and supports people in areas as diverse as disability respite therapy, foster care, adoption and child neglect. It also helps disadvantaged children through practical services and programmes that are proven to work.
Action for Children is one of the UK leading children’s charities, which has been supporting disadvantaged children for almost 150 years. They continue to lead the way in developing innovative services and provide vital support to the most disadvantaged children, young people and their families in the heart of local communities across the UK.
The charity provides intensive support for families in crisis by teaching them parenting skills and providing a safe place to come and rebuild their relationships. It offers practical support and counselling for children and young people who have experienced severe difficulties in their lives such as sexual abuse, domestic violence or antisocial behaviour by supporting their education, employment and training opportunities, and teaching them the skills they need to live independently.
