A career in law

I.
Lawyer – anyone who has been trained in the law and certified to give legal advice.

In Canada
The two roles are not separate (a lawyer is known as a barrister and solicitor)
In the USA
A lawyer is called an attorney
III.
In many civil law countries, notaries take part in drafting contracts and giving legal advice to private individuals (civil law notary)
The US term – notary public, refers to people who witness and certify the legal validity of documents, take affidavits, etc.
Notaries public are not necessarily trained lawyers.

Corporate counsel works exclusively for corporation and both advises and represents the corporation in legal matters

Bar lawyer – barrister
Sole practitioner (a solo practice)
Public –sector lawyer performs a similar activity to that of a corporate lawyer

Bodies of law
• Common law – England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the US.
Laws come primarily from customs, usage and earlier court decisions
• Civil law – much of continental Europe
Laws come primarily from written legal codes
Mixed systems – India, Israel, Iran, China, SA

Types of law
• Statutes – documents issued by sovereign states (i.e. independent countries)
• Codes – a set of rules about how something should be done or how people should behave. Penal/criminal code
• By-laws (UK) or ordinances (USA) are issued by non-sovereign bodies.
• Regulations are issued by non-governmental agencies and have the force of law.
IX.
• Directives – specifically in the EU. They commit the member states to meeting certain obligations in their own legislatures (parliaments).
• Bills are proposed laws which have not yet been ratified or adopted.
