practices of Walt Disney Studios, with speculation on the meaning behind Chomet’s work.

The Triplets of Belleville
The Triplets of Belleville opens with a black and white homage to the animation style of the
1920s and 30s, known as the golden age of animation (Bendazzi, 2015, p. 2). The eponymous
Triplets are featured centre stage, animated with a fast and consistent rhythm to match the
musical score, with their limbs moving in the typical “rubber hose” style found in early
animations like Steamboat Willie ​(Steamboat Willie, 1928)​. This aesthetic style leans on
nostalgia to deliver an energetic and lively quality, aided by a few familiar faces like Josephine
baker and Django Reinhardt (​Neupert, 2005)​.
At the start of the story we are introduced to Champion, a young boy who lives with his
grandmother, Madam Souza. She tries to spark Champion’s interest through various methods
including playing the piano, gifting a pet dog, and building a train set, but the boy’s movement
timing remains slow and tentative, as he appears thankful but not overly enthused. It’s not until
Madam Souza gives Champion a tricycle that we see a transformation, as he rapidly cycles
