The school year should be extended from 180 to 210 days

School undoubtedly has a big impact on children – they go there to gain knowledge and social skills. Even though schools have a lot of benefits, it is also draining and difficult. Typically, school year has 180 days but recently there have been proposals to extend it to 210 days. In my opinion school year should not be longer since it would be useless and damage children.

Firstly, extended school year would be useless. Since curriculum is made for current length of school year, it would be finished before the end of the year and going to school would become a waste of time. For example, Lithuanian government extended school year few years ago – they added few more weeks. This caused a lot of discontent among students and teachers since there is nothing to do for at least two weeks. The last tests and exams are written at the beginning of June, and midterm and annual grades are also finalised, but pupils must stay in school until the end of June. Even if new things would be added to the curriculum, children would be too tired to study during added time since the added time is during the summer. Then the weather is hot and sunny which makes it rather challenging to focus on schoolwork.

Secondly, it is important to consider that extended school year would damage children. School is draining mentally and physically. Long days with lessons, homework and extracurricular activities drain children and they become burned out. It is a known fact that the number of pupils that struggle with anxiety and depression is rising. The numbers are already increasing without the extension of school year. Managing students’ mental health is already a problem. Extending school year would only take away more time from summer holidays which are crucial to pupils’ overall performance during the school year.
