The role of cinema, TV, radio

I think that almost all people in our country have a TV and TV watching could be called a national disease because television has a powerful hold over people mind. It is an instrument of leisure, of information and – to a very limited extent – of culture.
My opinion is that the main functions of TV in our country are informational and entertainment. Several times a day we could watch news, almost every day we could watch political chat shows and others informational programs about ordinary and sometimes scary Lithuanian people life. Of course there are plenty prime-time entertainment programs like sitcoms, soap operas, quiz shows, musical shows, pageants [pedžent] (gražuolių konkursas) and quite boring Hollywood films. Of course there are some educational programs about nature, culture or traveling, there are documentary films but these programs usually are broadcasting on weekends then many people are spending their free time not at home and the truth is that just small part of our society like educational programs.
So I think TV could be called a national disease. It doesn’t stop people reading newspapers or books, going to the cinema or theatre but for many people these activities are occasional, irregular and ultimately of secondary importance. Television is one of the main subjects of conversation at school, in offices, at home and in the street. People every time or in every place are talking about programs that they have seen. So how can we say that TV is destroying the art of conversation? For many buttoned-up persons TV helps to make friends because those persons could talk not about themselves but about programs they have seen.
