The history of Ukmergė museum of local lore

We divided information about Ukmergė‘s museum of local lore into different steps to help you understand the chronological progression of this museum, which represents our home – Ukmergė.
In April 2, 1933 teachers and students, some of whom were scouts in Ukmergė gymnasium, opened a museum in Kauno str. 10. Artists and the scout leader believed that this would be the beginning of a huge city museum.
In September, 1939 V. Čižiūnas, an active local historian, founded a society whose main purpose was to get to know the past and the present of his homeland, its nature and culture and to protect historical material.
STEP III
In June, 1940. the establishment of the museum was stopped due to Lithuania‘s occupation and people‘s exile to Siberia. The gymnasium became a military hospital and many antiquities have disappeared.
During the occupation of Lithuania, there were approximately 130 thousand people deported to Siberia against their will.
