Stereotypes

• A stereotype is an over-generalized belief about a particular category of people. It is an expectation that people might have about every person of a particular group. The type of expectation can vary; it can be, for example, an expectation about the group's personality, preferences, appearance or ability. Stereotypes are sometimes overgeneralized, inaccurate, and resistant to new information, but can sometimes be accurate.
If you don’t delve into the specifics of the research, the scientist will probably imagine wearing a white robe and spending a full day in the lab doing scientific experiments. According to the chairwoman of the Lithuanian Young Scientists' Union dr. Milena Medineckienė, a modern scientist, is far from just research.
• Looking at the list of researcher's activities presented by M. Medineckienė, it becomes clear that people who are closed and completely isolated from social life could hardly fulfill the requirements of this profession.
• According to S. Tamulevičius, this is probably one of the most outdated stereotypes. "I think it's a completely failed stereotype. Out of 13 of my doctoral students, half of those who defended their dissertations are girls, ”says S. Tamulevičius.
4. There are no young people among researchers
• Paliakaitė, who received the award of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences this year, is fascinated by the profession of a scientist with her freedom and opportunities to create something useful with her activities. According to S. Tamulevičius, it is fun to work with young scientists, because they are open to innovations, quickly absorb information technologies, and the subtleties of software. "The older generation of scientists loses a bit in this activity," the professor notes.
5. The field of researcher's interests is limited
• It would probably be difficult to create discoveries that make life easier for humanity by working on a regular schedule from 8 p.m. in the morning...
