Artificial intelligence
My topic is AI, which is short for artificial intelligence. AI is a relatively new thing that has wormed its way into our everyday lives. Online sites like Chat GPT, Truth GPT, Microsoft Bing and many more were made easily accessible to the public in the second decade of the 21st century. Even though average citizens were given access to it fairly recently, different apps have been using it for years. For example, Meta, Google, Amazon and others use algorithms to predict a person’s interests and based on that, show different ads or recommendations. With AI predictions come some privacy concerns, like data exploitation and security, and of course biases. AI bias refers to AI systems that produce biased results that reflect and perpetuate human biases within a society, including historical and current social inequality. One of the AI biases examples is Amazon’s algorithm discriminating against women. In 2014 Amazon introduced AI technology that evaluates resumes and rates them based on the applicant’s suitability for a specific role. Since for a very long time women have been underrepresented in STEM, AI rated female resumes lower than the ones submitted by male applicants. Amazon realized that there was a problem and made some changes, however it didn’t work the way it was supposed to, so Amazon eventually ditched the project in 2017. AI also poses a question about job displacement. One of the most obvious examples, which can also be seen in Lithuania, is self-check-out. Using various forms of self-check-out causes employees to lose their value and possibly get fired in the long run. AI is getting more and more applied in various industries like healthcare, finance and transportation. These days AI can help process medical data and give medical professionals important insights to help improve health outcomes and patient experiences. AI powered robots can also perform surgeries or help doctors perform the surgeries remotely. In finance AI is being used to drive insights for data analytics, performance measurement, predictions and forecasting, real time calculations, customer servicing, intelligent data retrieval etc. In transportation AI is used to provide safety warnings, monitor surrounding traffic conditions, make transportation systems safer and so on. Nowadays we can also find self-driving cars offering different services like delivering food or driving you to a desired destination. In the future AI is predicted to grow exponentially: become more integrated into our everyday lives and revolutionize different sectors including previously mentioned healthcare, transportation and finance. According to experts, there is a 10% chance that by 2027 machines will surpass humans in all tasks. Other experts predict, that AI will become smarter than humans, which will lead to a new era in human history.
