AIM

• The aim of this presentation is to provide information about physiological process of the body: pain. Its causes, functions and how to relieve it.

Physiological Processes

• Physiology is the vast study of living organisms, their organs, cells and molecules. Physiology isa function of many organ sistems such as the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the respitaroy system, the urinary system, the gastrointestinal system, the reproductive system and the endocrine system, however in this presentation we will focus on nervous system, specificlay – pain. It’s concepts, causes, mechanisms, how to regulate pain and how said regulations affect human body.

Pain definition and causes

• Pain can be defined as a distressing sensory feeling that signals of potential harm to tissues. However Clifford J. Woolf(2010) categorizes pain into three parts:
• (A) Nociceptive Pain;
• (B) Inflammatory Pain;
• (C) Pathological Pain.

• (A) Nociceptive Pain:
• Definition: Sensation linked to the identification of potentially harmful stimuli to tissues.
• Purpose: Protective in nature.
• This is the pain we feel when we touch something too hot, cold, sharp, etc. It is a warning signal that something is not right and could possibly harm you. This part of pain is extremely important for identifying dangerous objects and phenomenas.

• (B) Inflammatory Pain:
• Definition: Connected with tissue damage and the presence of immune cells.
• Purpose: Protects the body by inducing heightened sensitivity to pain until healing is complete.
• This part of pain helps to protect the healing body by creating a situation that impairs movement and deters from physical contact

Pain definition and causes

• (C) Pathological Pain:
• Definition: Arises from a disease state.
• Causes: Either due to nervous system damage or abnormal functioning.
• This type of pain is an abnormality, it doesn’t protect or heal the body, this pain happens when organism is damaged and the pain is felt without warning signals.
