Paganism

Paganism is broadly defined as anyone involved in any religious act or practice which is not Christian. Almost the same can be said about the word ‘pagan’ which is often used to describe a man who is nothing but uncivilised or unchristian. Jews and Muslims also use the term to point out anyone outside their religion. There are some who define it as religions outside Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism or Hinduism, while others simply determine it as having no religion at all. Paganism originated from the Neolitic era. Paganism is usually polytheistic, but one god is often chosen to be a supreme godhead, eg. ancient egyptians had about 2000 gods, but the leading one was Amun-Ra, the Sun God. The main subjects of worship were ( and still are in neo-Paganism) all kinds of nature objects and forces, eg. in Baltic paganism people had their “holly forests”, which were not allowed to be deforested.
• Shamanism: practiced primarily by native people of Asia, shamanism involves a belief in good and evil. Myth, ritual, and respect for the Earth are key elements in the ancient religion.
• Shintoism: formed in Japan in about II-III AD. It was both political and religiuos system, which deified the variuos forces of nature. As a conservative country, Japan never abandoned this religion.
Nowadays there are many Pagan organisations worldwide, most catering for specific traditions such as Druidry or Asatru, but a few, such as the Pagan Federation (f. 1971, UK) or the Pan-Pacific Pagan Alliance (f. 1991, Australia), representing the entire tradition.
Today, Paganism (neo-paganism) celebrates the Earth, living creatures, nature.
