A disaster can be defined as any tragic event that involves at least one victim of circumstance, such as an accident, earthquake, fire, terrorist attack or explosion. Disasters came in many shapes and sizes. Most are related to the weather. Some are predictable – like a hurricane. Disasters are dividing in two groups – natural and human-made.
At 5:33 in the evening the magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale  earthquake rocked southern California on July 29, 2008. Residents were awakened on Tuesday by an unwelcome call for everyone in the city.
One resident, Mary Collins, was shaken awake to the sound of tremors violently rocking her house. The quake had blown open her front door, crashed down the top two floors of the building onto her first-floor apartment. She trapped under debris for a few hours with serious injuries. Hopefully, she was rescued. The quake killed many people, severely damaged more than 2,000 homes and brought down eight highway bridges. To make matters worse, scientists expect more powerful earthquakes.
The good news is that the Californian authorities are taking these predictions seriously. Engineers are working to strengthen the steel frames of buildings and bridges.
