The painting I am going to be talking about today is one of my favourites and one of the most popular ones in the world. It is called ,,Cafe Terrace at Night’’ and is painted by Vincent van Gogh.
The main meanings of artistic expression - bright, absorbing colors - were discovered by Vincent only in 1888 when he moved to live in the small town of Arles in southern France. Van Gogh was considered to be at his creative best during this part of his life. The colors of his paintings became expressive and intense, necessary points, lines, strokes just poured into his works. Van Gogh suffered from a series of catastrophic love failures, which played a key role in aggravating his lifelong mental illness. His only respite used to come from taking in the scenery around him and applying them onto a canvas. In the late works of the artist, the beauty of nature acquires a certain menace, sadness, although the color remains glaring. This painting of a colorful outdoor view is a picturesque work, the vision of a relaxed spectator who enjoys the charm of his surroundings without any moral concern. It recalls Van Gogh's mood when he wrote that "the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day." The painting features a terrace in the north-west corner of Forum Square, a popular city café, lit by gas lanterns at night. The first thing I noticed is that the atmosphere of the painting is created by the contrast between the yellow and orange tones with tiny visitor figures and the view of the blue, starry sky with a dark street behind the café.
