Middle Stone Age

Humans began building clusters of homes 15,000 years ago, during the Ice Age. Ice age humans lived in caves some of the time but they also made tents from skins.
Middle Stone Age or Mesolithic period, this period lasted from approximately 7000 B.C. to 4000 B.C. During this period no metal was used and tools were made from stone, bones. Mesolithic man built huts, pottery and tools have been used. The people of Mesolithic Ireland were hunters and gatherers. The family groups would live near rivers and lakes in houses made from animal skins spread over a bowl-shaped timber frame. Some reconstructed Mesolithic homes we have seen at Irish National Heritage Park which are situated approximately 3 miles from Wexford Town off the Dublin.
Human-made shelters build in Middle Stone Age. These homes were not permanent - the people moved around a lot from site to site and the skins from the houses were brought with them to the new site. The camps always were set up near the coast, lakes or rivers and they rarely were near the forests. The key elements of a Mesolithic life were thus flint weapons, a meat-rich diet, a nomadic, hunter-gatherer lifestyle and skin huts.
