Letter of Protest

I am writing to express my concern about the plans to build a new nuclear power plant in the outskirts of Vilnius. I understand that it is to be finished in 2 years and launched in 3 years at spring of 2024.
My particular and main concern is the long-term future for the powerplant. I understand the advantages of a nuclear power plant – it provides ton of energy, has better cost/power ratio, but what about the environment? The nuclear wastewater will likely eventually pollute nearby water sources (rivers, lakes) and most importantly underground water streams, which are essential for the ecosystem’s wellbeing.
Furthermore, a nuclear power plant could be very dangerous. The fact is, in case of it not functioning properly the catastrophe can be devastating. For example, look at Fukushima’s power plant in 2011. A simple earthquake, that caused a tsunami and then a flood in the nuclear power plant stopped the water pumps from doing their job properly, thus making the reactor overheat and meltdown. Only moments away from a disaster – a huge leak of nuclear materials into the air – reactor was stopped successfully by bravest of workers. Even still, there was leakage of wastewater into the Pacific Ocean.
In addition, the cost of building and maintaining one is outrageous. For one single-core, the country must spend about 7 billion euros. The cost is bound to adversely affect people directly – the cost is a big part of the country’s budget. If it has to close down, even more, because it’s not as simple as flicking the switch.
It is important to recognize that there are other cheaper, better, simpler options. Take windmills, solar panels, water plants. These all are eco-friendly and if maintained, executed properly they can make as much power combined as a power plant eventually. The...
