L. da Vinci "The Virgin of the Rocks"

INTRODUCTION
There are two versions of the Virgin of the Rocks. They were painted not at the same time. The earlier, is thought, now rests in the Louvre, Paris and the other, later, in the National Gallery, London. What made these two pictures popular in recent years were the novel “The Da Vinci Code” where the version of the Louvre plays an important role and the recent examination of the version of the National Gallery, which has unearthed a remarkable discovery. But these things are what made the pictures popular. They existed before it about 500 years. During this time pictures attracted scholars. They tried to realize, why there are two pictures, how and why they differs, how much work Leonardo added painting them, examination all the documentary recources, connected with them.
I will try in my essay to look around what scholars unearthed – historical sources, related with them, the conditions, style, iconography. This theme was new for me so in the end of this essay I wrote the dictionary of specific words, connected with it.
Necessary mention, how I was searching for information. First step was internet –the easiest and quick way to know general things about the pictures. After, when I made acquaintance with them, second step was to look for the professional researches. Most widely wrote about “the Virgin of the Rocks” pictures Martin Davies. Much of his given information I use in my essay. Important Kenneth Clark, scholar of Leonardo da Vinci, who wrote about all the life and work of the painter. Writing about the Virgin of the Rocks, Kenneth Clark also based himself on Martin Davies, whose examination of the documents, containing in a publication of the London Virgin of the Rocks is thorough and inflexible.
