Kitchen hygiene and why is it important

The kitchen is the heart of our home, therefore we should keep it clean. A clean kitchen helps to protect edible items from germs that can make a person ill, whereas an unhygienic kitchen is a place for many diseases which can result in food poisoning and other severe illnesses. One of the most important areas to take care of in the kitchen is the sink because often it is contaminated with bacteria. In this essay, the issue of bacteria in our kitchen and how to prevent them will be briefly analyzed.
Many different species of bacteria can be found in our kitchens that can cause diseases in humans. The most common ones are E. coli, salmonella, and campylobacter. First, E. coli is a bacteria that lives in our intestines. Most E. coli bacteria are not harmful, but, for example, E. coli O157:H7 can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting1. One may get infected with E. coli from contaminated food or water – mostly from raw poorly washed vegetables and uncooked meat. The other bacteria named Salmonella is found in uncooked meat or raw eggs. Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract, causing nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever, and headache2. Furthermore, another common kitchen bacteria is campylobacter. The symptoms of campylobacter infection are similar to an E. coli infection. Sometimes Campylobacter infections cause complications, such as irritable bowel syndrome, temporary paralysis, and arthritis3.
