J. Herbert "Domain"

I was reading novel “Domain” written by James Herbert. First published in Great Britain in 1984 by New English Library. The paperback book (440 pages), which I was reading, published in 1994.
Place of act is London in not far distant future.
5 bombs were dropped on London. As the heat wave spread out from the rising fireball, everything flammable and any lightweight material burst into flame. Within sounds the blast wave came out. People were lifted from their feet and thrown into the sides of collapsing buildings. Others were buried beneath buildings, some to die instantly, many to die beneath rubble, slowly suffocating or suffering long lingering death from their injuries.
Alex Deale and Steve Culver survived the explosion. Alex worked in government so knew lot of its secrets. Culver flied helicopters and owned his business. After the explosion Alex couldn’t see, but he knew where is the government shelter that could help them to survive. So Steve guided him to it. They had to get into underground because shelter was located there. Unluckily there were more dangers waiting for them. Steve froze when he saw big rat size of dog. Black shapes moved among them. Their food was people. Between the rats there were standing girl. She was alive and shocked. Steve saved the girl and all of them got to shelter.
One of the effects of a nuclear blast is electro magnetic pulse, which can destroy electrical network and communication system over the area of hundreds miles. So people in the shelter were left without any contact with other shelters, which were all over UK.
Alex and Steve got sick for few days because they got the minor dose of radiation. All that time doctor Clare Reynolds and Kate Garner (the saved girl) were looking after them. Mood was changing in the...
