In this experiment we investigate, how does the membrane permeability change, when it is affected by the different temperatures. Also our aim is to determine the approximate temperature at which the membrane proteins are denatured and membrane is destroyed.
Our hypothesis says that the bigger temperature makes the membrane more permeable. It means that the permeability of the membrane directly depends on temperature by which it is heated.
In this investigation the relevant independent variable is the temperature of the water, in which the beetroot pieces are held. The controlled variable is the permeability of the plasma membrane of the beetroot cells. In a case of determining the permeability of the membrane by measuring the density of coloured water, this density (intensity of the colour of the coloured water) is also a controlled variable. It also depends on the temperature.
Here is the table, which includes our recorded data. On the left side there are the temperatures of water in the different cylinders, in which we kept pieces of beetroot pieces.
In each cylinder of water with different temperature we put 9 beetroot pieces of the same size. After 15min we took them out. We devided each 9 pieces into 3 groups, consisting of 3 pieces, and put into 3 separate test tubes with the same amount of distilled water. Again, after 15min we took the beetroot pieces out. In this way we prepared 3 samples of water, containing any beetroot pigment, that had escaped from the tissue, for each temperature (in which the beetroot pieces were held before).
