Genetic engineering

For those of you who don’t already know what that is, it is the process of altering DNA in an organism genome. People have been altering the genomes of plants and animals for many years using traditional breeding techniques. Artificial selection for specific, desired traits has resulted in a variety of different organisms, ranging from sweet corn to hairless cats. Nowadays, it can be used variously from medicine to agriculture. For instance, in medicine, genetic engineering has been used to mass-produce human growth hormones and for creating vaccines and drugs for treating hospitalized patients. Unfortunately, in agriculture there are still a lot of discussions, questions about food modifications and it’s consequences.

On the one hand, Genetic modification is a faster and more efficient way of getting the same results as selective breeding, because you do not have to spend months or even years to change one property of an organism. Also, people would have the ability to grow plants practically wherever they want, in spite of soil or weather. Therefore, it would mean a decrease in food prices. Moreover, the use of GMOs could mean the end of pesticides which is the only toxic substance released intentionally into our environment to kill living beings. But the main concern here is the pesticide runoff that goes into the soil and water making them toxic, harmful and very hard to clean.
