During Victorian period children were dependant from their parents. When children grew up, the boys were expected to work and the girls stayed at home with their mother. They were expected to marry as soon as possible. In Bernard Shaw’s drama Mrs. Warren’s Profession children act differently and often disrespect and rebel against their parents. Mrs. Warren’s daughter Vivie and Samuel’s Gardner son Frank do that having different reasons.
Vivie does not pay any attention that mother tries to control her life because she has already used to accept her own decisions.
“MRS. WARREN. […] Vivie: whats the meaning of this? [She produces a commercial envelope, and fumbles at the enclosure with trembling fingers] I got it from the bank this morning.
“VIVIE. It is my monthly allowance. They sent it to me as usual the other day. I simply sent it back to be placed to your credit, and asked then to sent you the lodgement receipt. In future I shall support myself. “(Shaw 1804, Act 4)
Vivie clearly shows to her mother that she is now independent and can earn money for herself. Especially when she understands how this money were earned and disagrees with that kind of incomes. Though, there is a different situation between Frank and Samuel Gardner. “REV.S. [severely] Yes, I advised you to conquer your idleness and flippancy, and to work your way into an honourable profession and live on it and not upon me.” (Shaw 1772, Act 2). This reference shows that Frank is still living with his father and is dependant on him. “FRANK.Oh yes I dare say! Did you ever preach at her the way you preach at me every day?” (Shaw 1772, Act 2) However, he does not think that this is enough to show more respect to his father. Frank often rebukes Samuel...
