While thinking about crime investigation most people imagine bloody crime scenes, DNA, or

fingerprint samples, but sometimes it is words. Messages, letters, dialogues, or monologues

hold much more information than most realize and are a crucial part of crime investigation.

Analyzing these texts or conversations can uncover many details of a crime case. That is exactly

what forensic linguistics focuses on. Professional linguists examine written or spoken evidence

to help identify the criminals based on their use of language. The story below about the

Unabomber is one of the most famous cases where the application of forensic linguistics helped

to identify a suspect completely by his or her use of language and solve a 17-year-old cold case.

In 1978 a bomb exploded in Chicago university. The FBI states that through the upcoming 17

years more explosion followed that killed three people and injured many more. The FBI task

force opened an investigation called “UNABOMB” and hired more than 150 investigators to

solve this case and identify the criminal (FBI). The institution informs that the criminal left no

forensic evidence, so the investigation team had no progress identifying the person behind the

bombings. The team only figured that he or she must have been raised in Chicago based on the

language used in the manifesto, but the gender or occupation was unclear (FBI). In the FBI

page it is written that the victims were also chosen randomly with no clear intentions. In 1995

the Unabomber sent a 35-thousand-word manifesto to the FBI headquarters explaining his

ideas about today’s society (FBI). After much thought the FBI director decided to publish the

manifesto. It appeared in many newspapers including The Washington Post. According to FBI

after the publication thousands of people started suggesting different suspects, but only one

stood out. It was David Kaczynski a man who provided many different notes and letters written
