Going on antidepressants… for forever?

With the ever so popular biochemical model of depression being widely accepted and practiced

by the modern psychiatry, more and more people choose the aid of antidepressants in hopes to relieve

their suffering. Nowadays there is a long line-up of antidepressant medication, which allows people to

pick and choose the one that is right for them. The popularity of antidepressants is not unfounded – they

do work! Numerous clinical trials have proven their efficacy. The problem stands, however, that clinical

trials usually only last around 6 weeks. We are left in a slight haze regarding the effects of long-term

antidepressant usage. Reports of severe withdrawal effects and troubles going off the medication are not

scarce and rather point to an alarming pattern. Could it be that the risks of going on antidepressants have

been underplayed?

In their study, Cartwright, Gibson, and Read (2018) examine women’s experiences in recovering

from depression with the help of antidepressants. As the authors point out, different perspectives of the

medication unfold as the length of usage increases. Short-term antidepressant users reported positive

changes, using antidepressants as a tool, and regaining their lost selves. On the contrary, long-term usage

has led many women to lose their sense of agency and rather see themselves as inherently broken and
