 Good afternoon ladies, I’m the representative of Lithuanian Youth Organization that struggles against drug abuse and I am here to inform you about marihuana.
As we all know there are lots of drugs in our society, but the most popular drug among teenagers is marihuana because Lithuania is a transit country, it is very easy to get this drug. Drug abuse enters our country as part of Western European culture that is why using marihuana is the most important problem of nowadays.
My presentation is based on several articles taken from the Internet and I’ll be developing three main points. First I’ll give you some statistics and information about marihuana, second I’ll tell you why people use this drug, if they become addicted, how it affects driving, brain; and lastly, I’ll explain you what is the situation of marihuana using in Lithuania.
So now let me start with explaining what marihuana is and how many teenagers smoke it. Marihuana is a green, brown, or grey mixture of dried, shredded leaves, seeds and flowers of the hemp plant. It is usually smoked as a cigarette or in a pipe or a bong, recently it has appeared in cigars called blunts. The substance of marihuana can be detected in the body several days after smoking session. However, in heavy chronic users they can be detected for weeks after they have stopped using marihuana. You may hear marihuana called by street names such as pot, weed, grass, boom, Mary Jane, gangster, or chronic. There are more than 200 slang terms for marihuana. All forms of marihuana contain more than 400 different chemicals and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). THC potency of marihuana has increased since the 1970s but has been about the same since the mid-1980s.
