The differential is an essential part of the automobile. It was invented by Australian engineer David Shearer in 1897. The differential allows the outer drive wheel to rotate faster than the inner drive wheel while turning. This is crucial especially when the vehicle is making a turn at moderate or high speeds. I will briefly explain how it works.
When a car is driving straight, both drive wheels are rotating at the same speed. When the car is turning, the wheels has to move at different speeds. In this situation, the planet pinions spin with respect to the crown wheel as they turn around the sun gears. This allows wheels to spin at different rates. The primary drawback of the open differential is that if one wheel looses traction, for example, it gets stuck in thick mud, it still gets lots of power from the driveshaft while the other wheel, which needs all the power, doesn’t get any the result of it is a stuck vehicle. The solution is locking differential, they can mostly be found in 4x4 cars. This type of differential has the ability to lock itself when needed and it will force all the wheels to have equal power delivered. It is primarily used for off-road driving.
