Culture and preservation: Iroquois

Iroquois Confederacy or Iroquois League, North American confederation of indigenous peoples, initially comprising the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Tuscarora, and Seneca. The word “Iroquois” is reputed to come from a French version of a Huron (a First Nations people) name- considered an insulting- meaning “Black Snakes”. When the prophet Deganawidah and his disciple Hiawatha in 1570 founded the confederacy, the story of the Five Nations started and lasts till now. To know Iroquois better we should find out more about their culture, language and preservations of these two items.
To begin with, the Iroquois League was founded to eliminate incessant intertribal warfare and to end cannibalism. Today we can see totally different nations of the Iroquois. Many of them nowadays are highly acculturated, holding jobs in communities surrounding the reservations. Moreover, their heathen religion and a conception of life as a struggle between the forces of good and evil have been almost replaced by Christianity (Handsome Lake’s religion survived until today). Nevertheless, there is still left one of the most uniting factors in Iroquois culture- the common heritage of their arts and crafts. Even after centuries of pressure from whites to give up their Iroquois identity and be assimilated, the Iroquois have retained or reasserted their uniqueness in their arts. Since the late sixties there has been strong revival of many of their arts. Iroquois arts carry down through the ages the proud traditions of Iroquois culture celebrated at the Festivals and at the Iroquois Museum. Briefly, in spite of essential changes in the Iroquois culture, Handsome Lake’s revelation has enabled them to maintain their ethnic identity.
