• Thefts. Car-thieves always make use of careless owners, so people have to pay extremely big attention to their cars: always lock the door, install security systems and not to leave them in dark streets or in the yards of blocks of flats during the night. Some of thefts, e.g. shoplifting don’t cause a lot of harm, poor people usually steal food and other goods in order to survive. Meanwhile muggers, who attack people in the streets, not only take the money, documents, mobile phones, credit cards, valuables, but also might cruelly beat or murder their victims. The damage is triple: physical, moral and material.
• Hooliganism. It’s especially widespread among young people. After discotheques, parties or mass events, such as concerts and sport matches, drunk youngsters cause disturbance in public places by making noise, shouting curses, breaking bottles, windows, benches, kicking dustbins, destroying plants, painting on walls etc.
• Trade in people. Young, naïve Lithuanian girls, who have no occupation, often get interested in attractive offers to work abroad: they expect a well-paid job as a waitress, room maid, night-club dancer. Smart ‘employers’ promise a successful career and prospects, but the reality is different: such women are exploited and forced to work as prostitutes. There should be more information about trade in people on TV, radio and press. Women, going abroad, should know how dangerous and risky it is.
• Corruption. The most corrupt institutions in Lithuania are the police, customs and courts. Many officials make use of their official position and take bribes for different favours, e.g. customers allow smuggling, policemen don’t fine for speeding, judges acquit criminals, etc. According to the research, more than 70% of people don’t tolerate corruption. Still, about 60% are ready to give at least a small bribe, if it would help to solve their problems....
